Ukraine is a country of 48 million people situated at the geographical heart of Europe. Formerly a part of the Soviet Union, Ukraine gained its independence in 1991. Thanks to the Orange Revolution, Ukraine is now a modern, free, and democratic nation, which hopes to become a member of both NATO and the European Union in a few years. The capital of Ukraine is Kiev – a city of three million people. It takes just two to three hours to fly to Kiev from most European capitals. The resort town of Yalta, situated on the southern shores of the Crimean peninsula, has traditionally been a major centre for the film industry. The first feature film was shot in Yalta in 1911, and the first film studio opened its doors in 1917, drawn by Yalta’s 300 days of sunshine a year. In Soviet times up to 60 feature films a year were made in the ex-USSR’s equivalent of the USA’s "Hollywood".
Ukraine has recently signed the European Convention for Cinematographic Co-Production, and Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture is committed to the development of the film industry.
